If you’ve been scrolling on your TikTok For You Page lately, you had probably seen this story. A game streamer nicknamed “Fat Cat” (θη«) from China jumped to his death into the Yangtze River due to his breakup. The story has more twists and turns than you can imagine!

“66,000 CNY has been sent”
The last of his savings, all transferred to his girlfriend. He had nothing left. Liu Jie looked at his chat window, the young man tremblingly typed, “Why did you wait 2 years to say goodbye?”
760 stems of flowers were on its way to her, symbolizing the 760 days they have been together. Then he jumped into the Yangtze River.
The 21-year-old had moved 900 km from Hunan to Chongqing, China for love. He worked as a game streamer and game ranker with the nickname Fat Cat. With his gaming skills playing “Honor of Kings”, many hired him to level up their accounts. Charging 20 CNY each time, he has accumulated some fortune from working 16-hour days.
He did not keep this money though, he sent it to Tan Zhu. His 27-year old girlfriend is a native of Chongqing, and he just wanted her love. He showed how much he put her needs above his. He sent her 510,000 CNY over the course of their 2-year relationship.
Fat Cat also confessed to a customer that he worked so much to help Tan Zhu open a flower shop. She finally did, with 300,000 CNY of his investment money. But this was not enough, she needed traveling money, eating out money, gift money, mobile phones.. Just everyday things, right? Isn’t this normal, though, for couples?
Liu Jie lived an extremely frugal life to keep up with her spending. Each day, he only allowed himself to buy cheap vegetarian meals for 10 CNY. McDonald’s became such a luxury to him that he changed his profile picture to a cat with the text “I don’t want to eat vegetables, I want to eat McDonald’s”.
On April 11th, 2024, the young man jumped off a bridge into the Yangtze River in Chongqing. This incident was unfortunately fatal, and authorities recovered his swollen body 10 days later floating alongside a cargo ship.
It is hard to imagine his despair during his last moments, lonely in a city where he has no roots in. Heartbroken, alone, and lacking mental clarity, he chose to leave this world.
After Fat Cat’s incident
Fat Cat’s elder sister started posting videos after his tragic death. She went through his phone and found the transfer and chat records between Tan Zhu and him. She demanded Tan Zhu to send back the funds that she received.
After the police intervened, Tan Zhu returned around 130,000 CNY to Fat Cat’s family. The rest of the money (~380,000 CNY) is still in question, and the case had been turned to the authorities. The sister expressed that she still feels immense grief due to her brother’s death.
Hearing Fat Cat’s tragic story, people expressed their sympathy by sending take out food and drinks to the bridge where Fat Cat jumped. Even McDonald’s rolled out a 10 CNY menu promotion in honor of him.
Tan Zhu’s side of the story
This story would not be complete until we get Tan Zhu’s side of the story as well. She responded on May 3rd that she is denying all false accusations. She said the publicized amount is incorrect, and Fat Cat transferred a total of 867,420 CNY to her. BUT she also transferred back 522,457 CNY in the span of their relationship. Therefore the amount that she ultimately received from him is ~350,000 CNY.
She also shared that their relationship was tumultuous and they almost broke up a few times. Each time they did, allegedly Fat Cat threatened to do drastic things in order to get back together. Fat Cat’s sister had questioned her version of the story and the case had been turned in to the police.
More controversies
New controversies began when they discovered that these food and drinks were empty! Restaurants were sending more than 100 takeout containers with nothing in it, or with water replacing other drinks. This has been reported to the authorities, with restaurant chains closing these problematic branches and firing the responsible employees.
Lessons and the importance of self-love
I think it is important to remember that we can only fill others’ cup when ours is whole. This is so vital in any kind of relationship. When you don’t have love for yourself and you don’t take care of your needs, it is just a recipe for a disastrous life.
People will only respect you when you have respect for yourself. This shows from your appearance and the way you interact with the world. You need to keep up with basic hygiene, nutrition, and exercise to live well. Create progress in your life, pursue your goals, grow your confidence- and your romantic life will blossom. I promise.
Never threaten others to force them to stay with you! It is absolutely the worst thing you can do. Instead, develop detachment and trust that the journey of life will let you meet better partners in the future.
