TL;DR
Dr. Moumita Debnath is a 31-year-old trainee doctor (resident) at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, India. She was found dead in the hospital on August 9th, 2024. Her body had extensive, brutal injuries from violent sexual assault. This case is now handled by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and monitored by the Indian Supreme Court.
Thousands of Doctors on Protest
It was August 13th, 2024 and international attention is on India. More than 8,000 doctors finally took to the streets of Maharashtra. In other parts of the country, more than 1 million doctors were seeking justice by candlelight vigils and strikes. They were marching in protest over the rape and murder of a young female doctor, found just four days earlier on August 9th.
Carrying signs saying “Justice delayed is justice denied“, the doctors are demanding 5 things:
- Better hospital security protocols
- Change for working and living conditions for trainee doctors
- Swift handling and resolution of Dr. Debnath’s murder case
- Harsher penalties for violence against women
- Stronger laws protecting doctors, eliminating bail for assaults against medical workers
Strikes in the healthcare facilities are majorly affecting the public, with doctors denying treatment for non-emergency patients. This act of solidarity has caused a large-scale impact, and the Supreme Court of India has intervened in this shocking case.
Who is Dr. Moumita?
Dr. Moumita Debnath was born in Kolkata, India, in 1993. She studied in the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) in Kalyani. She earned her degree within the College of Medicine and JNM Hospital. Her father stated that she was raised in a poor background, and she studied extremely hard to become a physician.
The father also worked hard to support her dreams, bettering his tailoring business to borrow enough to buy her a car. Her parents were so proud of her achievements, in fact, that they put her name instead of theirs on the house nameplate. With the Dr. prefix, naturally.
She was a girl who fed stray animals in her neighborhood, who dreamed of becoming successful and paying her parents’ debt. She was a high-achiever as well, putting in the time and effort for her calling as a medical professional.
Her experience during the COVID-19 global pandemic led Dr. Moumita to pick respiratory medicine as her specialty. She was undergoing her work as a postgraduate trainee at R.G. Kar Medical College. Nobody foreshadowed that this young doctor would not be safe at the hospital.
Tragic Murder of Dr. Moumita Debnath
(TW: Graphic description)
Dr Moumita has been doing her residency in the hospital since 2023. On the early hours of August 9th, the second year trainee doctor was just finishing up her 36-hour call shift at 3 am. The meager accommodation they have is quite far from the hospital, and on that day she decided to rest in the third floor seminar room. She planned to take a nap before going back to her call shift, as the long hours are terribly exhausting.
The next morning, the campus of RG Kar Medical College was rocked by the discovery of Dr. Debnath’s body with severe injuries. Her lifeless body was found in a seminar hall, bloody with injuries consistent with violent sexual assault. The eyes, mouth, and private part were bleeding and her body had wounds all over. Additionally, the legs were bent at an unnatural angle.

Broken bones, scratch marks, bite marks, and 150ml of male discharge was found during examination of her body. The gruesome injuries led people to believe that this was rape committed by a group of people, and the victim fought back hard. The autopsy revealed that the blood in her eyes are caused by the broken lens of her eyeglasses. India Today reported the cause of death to be “manual strangulation associated with smothering”.
Suspicious Cover Up to Victim’s Family
Later in the morning of August 9th, Assistant Superintendent Dwaipayan Biswas contacted the victim’s family and informed them that their daughter took her own life. The victim’s family was also held up for three hours, and was not allowed to see the victim’s body. Once they were able to, the shocking injuries and suspicious circumstances made it clear that this could not be further from suicide.
Her parents were extremely heartbroken by the tragic news of the murder incident. “My daughter was studious and would study 10-12 hours a day,” her father told the Times of India, “But everything has been shattered now.”
This was the moment when doctors from RG Kar Hospital stopped the car that was transporting the body of Moumita Debnath. Had they not stopped the car at that moment, we might never have known about this incident#justiceformoumitadebnath #RGKarHospital #KolkataDoctor pic.twitter.com/yhctOXm0PU

The Killer …or the Scapegoat?
The clue to the killer was a lone Bluetooth earbud that was left at the crime scene. The police also examined the CCTV footage and found the suspect: Sanjay Roy. He was a civic volunteer to the Police force, whose main task is to guide incoming patients. The 33-year-old had been married 4 times, with allegations of domestic violence. He was arrested for the brutal crime.
His arrest has been called into question, as it is likely that more perpetrators were involved in the crime. The injuries found during autopsy supports the likelihood of a group act. It is alleged that the killers involved are being covered up by people in power.
Speculative allegations say that he might be a convenient scapegoat or just one of many figures involved in this brutal incident. As of now, this is pure speculation and cannot be taken as fact.
Grief and Injustice in the Medical Community
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case. A team of experienced investigators has been deployed to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses. The authorities are working to uncover the truth behind this outrageous crime and potential cover-up. They are examining the hospital’s CCTV footage and the testimony of Dr. Debnath’s colleagues.
On August 15th, prime minister Narendra Modi had also spoken out about the general issue. “Crime against women should be investigated more urgently.”
The news of Dr. Debnath’s death quickly spread on social media under the hashtag #JusticeForMoumita. It is sparking a nationwide outcry for immediate action and a wave of solidarity from Indian women and the medical community at large. Dr. Debnath’s murder has sparked a nationwide conversation about the issue of sexual violence and the safety of women.
Nationwide Impact and Protests for Change

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has echoed these sentiments, calling for a nationwide strike and protests to demand the implementation of robust safety protocols and better support systems for women healthcare professionals. The organization has also called for the government to take swift action to address the broader issue of women’s safety in the country.
The tragic death of Dr. Moumita Debnath has had a significant impact on the medical community and India as a whole. The nationwide protests have shone a spotlight on the urgent need to address the systemic issues that put the lives and well-being of women in the medical field at risk.
As the investigation into Dr. Debnath’s murder continues, the medical community and the public at large await the results, hoping that justice will be served and that meaningful change will emerge from this tragedy. The safety of women in the medical profession, and indeed, in all spheres of society, must be a top priority, and the legacy of Dr. Moumita Debnath must be one of lasting and transformative reform.
“I won’t get my daughter back. But all I could do is have courage and be hopeful.” said Dr. Moumita’s father.
