Our Epic Journey: From Sun Moon Lake to Alishan ๐บ๏ธ
The Drive That Changed Everything
Starting from the serene Sun Moon Lake, my rental car adventure to the Alishan region was nothing short of spectacular. The main highway winds through some of Taiwan’s most breathtaking mountain scenery, but fair warning- those super curvy mountainous roads are not for the faint of heart!
The drive itself is an experience worth savoring. We’re talking about roads that snake through misty forests, past cascading waterfalls, and through majestic tunnels blasted right through the mountains. Each turn revealed another postcard-perfect view that had me taking out my camera constantly for photos. The engineering marvel of these mountain tunnels is incredible โ imagine the work that went into exploding through solid rock to create these passages!
Pro Tip: If you’re planning this drive, give yourself extra time. The journey from Sun Moon Lake to the Alishan area takes about 2-3 hours depending on stops, but trust me, you’ll want to stop. A lot. ๐ธ
My Booking.com Mistake (Actually a Happy Accident!)
Here’s where things get interesting โ and where I learned a valuable lesson about booking accommodations in Taiwan. I thought I was booking a place in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, but ended up staying in Chiayi County instead. Oops! ๐
But honestly? Best mistake ever. I stayed at ็ๅฑฑๆฐๅฎฟ (Panshan B&B), and wow- this place was nice! Newly renovated with modern amenities, I had absolutely no worries about creepy restrooms nor dimly lit hallways.
Though the host does not speak English (Google Translate was our best friend during this trip), the panoramic views of endless tea farms stretching across rolling hills were absolutely mesmerizing. This is especially true during sunrise when the mist lays over the leafy landscapes.
What Made This B&B Special:
- Floor-to-ceiling balconies showcasing tea farm vistas ๐
- Newly renovated modern facilities with hot water
- Breakfast is included, though with limited menu
- Prime location near the famous Alishan Sakura Trail
- Surprisingly affordable rates
Cherry Blossom Magic: The Trail That Stole My Heart ๐ธ
Alishan Sakura Trail Experience
Being so close to the Alishan sakura trail was pure serendipity. Early March is absolutely prime time for cherry blossoms in this area, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The trail was alive with the most magnificent blooming cherry blossom trees I’ve ever seen.
Picture this: a throng of photographers, both amateur and professional, positioning themselves at every angle to capture these natural wonders. The cherry blossoms here aren’t just pretty โ they’re absolutely breathtaking. Pink, soft petals create a canopy overhead, while fallen petals carpet the walking paths like nature’s confetti.
Photography Tips for Cherry Blossom Season:
- Visit early morning for the best light and fewer crowds
- Bring a tripod for those Instagram-worthy shots
- The sunrise time during early March is around 5:45 AM. Absolutely check the daily time for sunrise and sunset for that perfect golden hour snapshot!
- Pack layers โ mountain mornings are chilly!
Precious Tip from a Tea Shop Owner ๐ต
Here’s where the adventure took an unexpected turn. While exploring the area, we stumbled upon a charming local tea shop where the owner served us the most incredible Alishan oolong tea. This wasn’t just any tea โ this was liquid gold grown in the high-altitude mountain soil that gives Alishan tea its distinctive flavor profile.
The tea shop lady, with her weathered hands and knowing smile, gave us advice that completely changed our itinerary. “The old trees of Alishan National Forest Recreation Area,” she said, “that’s the must-see in this region. Everybody comes here to see the sacred tree and ancient trees around it โ they hold the spirit of Taiwan.”
And she was absolutely right.
Cherry Blossom Railway Trail
Alishan area is famous for the railway trail in the national forest. There is a secret place that not many people know though- another spot to view the cherry blossom railway trail! It is located in a small town nearby.
The small village town of Shizi has cherry blossoms aplenty with an aesthetic stretch of cute cafes and shops right by the train station. We made a stop for lunch just before going into the national forest area- and what a good decision that was!
We had yummy plates of Taiwanese pork chop and chicken leg with rice, served over a bed of locally grown vegetables. This is the spot for the local stand & railway. Make sure you wait to capture the moving trains beneath flowering cherry blossom trees! ๐ธ

Pro Insider Tip: The visitor center staff recommended taking the shuttle to Xianglin Station for the best forest experience and take the train back to the visitor center from Shenmu Station. This turned out to be golden advice! ๐ฏ
The Alishan Giant Tree Trail Adventure ๐ฅพ
Trail Logistics and Planning
The Giant Tree Trail is the crown jewel of the Alishan National Scenic Area hiking experience. This well-maintained boardwalk system takes you through some of the most magnificent old-growth forest in Taiwan. You can check out this official map to plan your walk.
Trail Specifications:
- Distance: Approximately 1.3 kilometers loop
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate (suitable for young kids with supervision)
- Time needed: 1-2 hours depending on photo ops
- Elevation: Minor elevation changes throughout, significant elevation on the stairs if you are starting from the Shenmu Station (I recommend starting from Xianglin Station)
The trail features excellent boardwalks and train tracks from the historic logging railway, adding historical context to your nature walk. Information boards along the way explain the forest ecosystem and the conservation efforts protecting these ancient giants.
What You’ll Encounter on the Trail
Walking the Giant Tree Trail is like stepping into a living museum. The misty forests create an ethereal atmosphere, especially in early morning when fog drifts between the massive trunks. The silence is profound โ broken only by birdsong and the occasional creak of ancient wood.
Trail Highlights:
- Multiple thousand-year-old cypress trees
- Historic logging railway remnants
- Small ponds reflecting forest canopy
- Diverse wildlife viewing opportunities
- Educational interpretation station
Ancient Giants of Alishan: Meeting Taiwan’s Living Legends
King Cherry Blossom Trees from Japan ๐ฏ๐ต
The King Cherry Blossom trees deserve their royal title. These specimens, originally from Japan, have adapted beautifully to Taiwan’s mountain climate. During peak bloom, they create tunnels of pink and white that feel almost otherworldly.
Unlike the native cherry varieties, these Japanese imports bloom slightly later and with more intensely colored petals. The contrast between the delicate blossoms and the rugged mountain backdrop creates photographic opportunities that professional photographers travel thousands of miles to capture.
The Three Sisters Tree
Our next stop was the famous Three Sisters Tree โ three massive cypress trees growing so close together they appear as one incredible organism. Each sister has her own personality, with different bark patterns and branch formations, yet they’ve grown together in harmony for centuries.
What Makes the Three Sisters Special:
- Estimated age: over 2,000 years
- Height: approximately 45 meters each
- Circumference: requiring 10+ people to encircle
- Cultural significance: represents family unity in Taiwanese culture
The No. 28 Giant Tree ๐ณ
The biggest tree in the Giant Trees Plank Trail that is still currently alive and standing is the No. 28 Giant Tree. This giant cypress made us feel so small, that’s how big it is! It is comparable to the giant Sequoia trees in California- and is a similarly majestic experience. I truly couldn’t capture the scale of this tree- so hard to fit in one frame!
The Sacred Tree (็ฅๆจ) โญ๏ธ
Truthfully we were confused at first- where is THE sacred tree? We thought it would be even bigger than No. 28.. but we were so wrong!
At Shenmu Station, we encountered our first true giant โ the 3,000-year-old sacred tree (็ฅๆจ). This isn’t just a tree; it’s a living monument to Taiwan’s natural heritage. The tree was unfortunately cut down for safety reasons in 1998, but its enormous trunk is still displayed in its full glory by the station.
During the Japanese occupation, the forest of Alishan was heavily logged. Many giant Cypress trees were cut to be processed and exported throughout the world. Only a few trees were deemed as holy and left standing by the Japanese. They even built a Tree Spirit Pagoda to appease the spirits of 100,000 trees that were cut down and 77 loggers who met their untimely death.
Sadly, the continuous logging of the forest made the sacred tree more prone to lightnings. A lightning struck the Sacred Tree in 1956 and a raging fire burned intensely inside the eroded tree trunk. Almost 200 people were working to put this formidable fire out- and it took 20 hours!
The area around the fallen sacred tree includes interpretive displays explaining the cultural significance of these giants to Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. These trees were considered sacred long before tourists started visiting, and that reverence is palpable when you’re standing in their presence.
Xianglin Station ๐
Following the visitor center’s advice, we took the shuttle to Xianglin Station, and this detour proved absolutely essential. The station itself is the best way to start a hike down the Giant Tree Trails, and it is close to the King Cherry Blossom trees.
Shenmu Station: Getting Back! ๐
The sacred tree, which we looked for EVERYWHERE, turned out to be at the Shenmu Station (Sacred Tree Station)!
If you are curious about the sacred tree, it is a fallen tree that previously stood strong for thousands of years.
After completing the Giant Tree trail, you can come back to the visitor center area by train. The one-way ticket can be purchased at the station ticket counter for 100 NTD one-way.
This train trip back is magical, let me tell you. The light streaming through the trees, the slow train moving through the forest… This experience made our trip to Alishan special. I definitely recommend you to take the train at least once to experience this.

Food and Local Culture: Flavors of the Alishan Mountains ๐
Traditional Mountain Cuisine
The restaurants around Alishan Station and visitor areas offer incredible local specialties that reflect both indigenous and Han Chinese culinary traditions.
Must-Try Local Specialties:
- Alishan tea preparations and tastings
- Indigenous-style grilled mountain vegetables
- Local mushroom varieties unique to high-altitude regions
- Traditional rice dishes with mountain herbs
- Sweet potato preparations in various forms
The food stalls aren’t just about sustenance โ they’re cultural experiences. Vendors often share stories about ingredient sourcing and traditional preparation methods passed down through generations.
Tea Culture Deep Dive
Alishan tea is absolutely legendary in Taiwan’s tea scene! You’re sipping tea grown in misty mountain conditions with morning fog and afternoon sunshine. The result is tea with incredibly complex flavor profiles. This stuff will change how you think about tea forever.
The magic happens at elevations above 1,000 meters where growing conditions are intense. The volcanic mountain soil adds incredible minerality you can actually taste. Hand-picking and traditional processing ensure every cup tells its mountain story. You’ll notice distinctive floral and fruity notes, and limited production makes this basically liquid gold!
During our tea shop visit, we learned about the tea cultivation process. Tea farmers work incredibly steep terraced slopes, often harvesting by hand in challenging mountain conditions. Some insects, interestingly, can also give the teas a more complex honey-like taste!
The respect for tradition combined with modern processing techniques creates teas that are genuinely world-class.
Sunrise Experience: The Ultimate Alishan Moment ๐
Duigaoyue Sunrise Platform
While we didn’t make it to the famous Duigaoyue Sunrise Platform during this trip, it’s absolutely on my must-do list for next time. This sunrise viewpoint is considered one of Taiwan’s most spectacular natural phenomena viewing locations.
Planning your sunrise adventure takes some serious prep work. You need to check the current sunrise time since it changes with the seasons. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to snag a good spot and soak in the pre-dawn atmosphere. Pack warm clothes because mountain mornings are absolutely freezing!
Don’t forget your headlamp or flashlight for any pre-dawn hiking. Bring your camera with extra batteries since cold weather drains power super quickly. Trust me, you don’t want to miss that perfect shot because your battery died!
Getting to the sunrise viewpoints requires some logistics planning. Some spots need short hikes from parking areas, which sounds doable but can be tricky in the dark. Public transport is pretty limited for early morning adventures. Consider staying nearby the night before your sunrise mission, or look into group tours if you don’t mind less flexible timing.
Wildlife and Natural Phenomena ๐ฆ
Biodiversity in the Alishan Ecosystem
The Alishan National Scenic Area is basically a biodiversity goldmine! The elevation range and varied microclimates create this incredible ecosystem. You’ve got everything from subtropical foothills to temperate mountain peaks. This means species that exist nowhere else in Taiwan call this place home.
Wildlife viewing here is all about timing and patience. Endemic bird species are most active at dawn and dusk, so early risers get rewarded. During warmer months, you’ll spot unique butterfly varieties fluttering around the trails. Small mammals occasionally make appearances on the quieter paths if you’re lucky.
The plant communities change dramatically as you gain elevation. It’s like walking through different climate zones in a single hike. Each level has its own character and unique species. The diversity is honestly mind-blowing when you really pay attention to it!
Seasonal Natural Phenomena
Each season brings unique natural displays to the Alishan region:
Spring Mist and Cherry Blossoms:The combination of morning mist and blooming cherry blossoms creates photographic opportunities that attract visitors from around the world. The interplay of pink petals and swirling fog is simply ethereal.
Summer Mountain Storms:Afternoon thunderstorms roll through the mountains with impressive drama. The sound of rain on ancient forest canopy is profoundly peaceful, and post-storm air clarity reveals distant mountain ranges in stunning detail.
Autumn Color Changes:While Taiwan doesn’t have dramatic fall foliage like temperate regions, subtle color changes in deciduous species create beautiful contrasts against evergreen conifers.
Winter Frost and Occasional Snow:Higher elevations sometimes receive frost or light snow, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland that few Taiwan visitors ever experience.
Photography Guide: Capturing Alishan’s Magic ๐ธ

- Lens cleaning supplies for misty conditions
Accessories:

- Extra memory cards โ you’ll take more photos than expected!
- Portable charger or power bank for multi-day adventures
Best Photography Locations and Times
The Giant Tree Trail boardwalks create absolutely stunning leading lines during golden hour! The sacred tree area delivers dramatic ancient forest shots that look straight out of a fairy tale. Cherry blossom railway trail during peak bloom season is pure photography gold. Small ponds reflecting forest canopy and sky create those dreamy mirror shots everyone loves.
Historic train tracks make compelling foreground elements that add depth to your compositions. Three Sisters Tree offers incredible scale comparison shots when you include people in the frame. Misty forest scenes work best during early morning when the atmosphere is thick and magical. Food stalls and cultural elements add that human interest factor that makes photos tell complete stories.

- Limited parking availability at popular locations

Family Travel: Alishan with Kids ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ
Kid-Friendly Activities and Trails
Alishan works surprisingly well for families with young nature lovers! The Giant Tree Trail boardwalks are safe and accessible for children. Train track exploration fascinates kids who love railways. Small ponds provide perfect nature observation opportunities. Food stalls offer kid-friendly snacks plus cultural experiences.
Safety Considerations with Children:

- Some trail sections have elevation that might challenge small children
- Always supervise children near train tracks and historical railway areas
Making It Educational and Fun (for Family)
Transform your visit into an adventure learning experience! Discuss tree ages at sacred groves and ancient giants. Share railway history lessons at Alishan Station and Xianglin Station. Indigenous culture displays provide great educational opportunities. Alishan tea cultivation offers traditional farming method lessons.
Try nature scavenger hunts along Giant Tree Trail. Give older children photography challenges to keep them engaged. Encourage journal writing about forest experiences. Collect memories through sketching and note-taking instead of picking plants.
Solo Travel: Exploring Alishan Independently ๐
Solo Adventure Benefits
Traveling solo through Alishan offers incredible flexibility in timing and itinerary changes. You’ll have better opportunities for meaningful local interactions. Spend extra time at personally meaningful locations without rushing anyone. Enhanced mindfulness and connection with natural surroundings comes naturally.
Inform accommodation hosts about hiking plans and expected return times. Carry emergency contact information and basic first aid supplies. Download offline maps and trail information before heading out. Consider joining group tours for certain activities while maintaining your independence.
Connecting with Local Culture
Solo travelers get the best authentic cultural exchange opportunities! Local Taiwanese people were super friendly and open to conversation. They even helped us when we had difficulty communicating with some vendors.
Honestly, solo traveling opens up so many more opportunities to have a dialogue with locals and fellow tourists. It might be hard if you do not know Chinese at all though, even with Google Translate on hand.
